Passports & Visas

Every traveller is responsible for holding the correct documents and permission to enter or transit through each country on the itinerary. Requirements depend on the passport being used, the route, the reason for travel, the length of stay and the traveller’s personal circumstances. Two people on the same booking may therefore have different requirements.

Check every traveller and every country

  • Make sure the name on the booking matches the passport exactly.

  • Check the passport’s issue date, expiry date, condition and any blank-page requirement. Do not assume that one blanket six-month rule applies everywhere.

  • Check the destination and every country used for a flight, cruise or land transit, even when you do not plan to leave the airport or port.

  • Find out whether a visa, electronic travel authorisation, arrival form, proof of funds, onward ticket or other document is required.

  • Check whether previous travel, citizenship, residency, dual nationality, criminal history or an earlier immigration decision changes the normal rule.

  • Check the rules for children travelling alone, with one parent or with an adult who is not their legal guardian.

  • Allow enough time for a new passport, visa or authorisation to be issued. A booked holiday does not guarantee that an application will be approved in time.

Use the official source for your circumstances

British citizens travelling on a full British citizen passport should begin with the FCDO entry-requirements page for each country, then follow the official immigration or embassy links it provides. Travellers using another passport, a refugee travel document or more than one nationality should contact the relevant embassy, high commission or consulate and their own passport-issuing authority.

Use official government application sites. Commercial visa and travel-authorisation websites can look official while charging additional fees, and an application made through a third party does not improve the chance of approval.

Important Notice

Passports and visas are your responsibility. I can point you towards general resources, but I cannot determine whether a traveller is eligible to enter a country or obtain a visa. If a traveller does not meet the requirements, a carrier or border authority may refuse travel. Cancellation charges, replacement arrangements and other costs may then be payable and may not be covered by insurance.
